Tara Priya, "Retro-Soul" Singer/Songwriter, Wins 18th Annual Billboard Song Contest
Tara Priya, a singer/songwriter in the style of retro-soul, has been named a winner in the 18th Annual Billboard Song Contest for her original R&B song "Rollin'". Inspired by The Temptations and Aretha Franklin, this upbeat track features a fresh-voiced Tara singing her troubles away with a little sass and growl.
The great-niece of the famed Middle Eastern poet, Sohrab Sepehri, art is in Tara’s blood. Piano and poetry began at 4, drums at 9; opera training commenced at 11, jazz voice added in high school. After winning two prestigious writing scholarships, Tara switched coasts to attend Columbia University, where she quickly settled down in NYC’s performance circuit.
Anxious to focus solely on music but reluctant to drop out like her Columbia inspirations (Alicia Keys, Lauryn Hill), Tara sped through school and graduated in 2.5 years with her BA in Economics. She returned to California to write and record her November 2010 eponymous EP and currently performs in Los Angeles, her native San Francisco, and NYC.
Named 1 of 3 "Pop" finalists in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, in the Top 25 of Nashville's 2010 Music City Songwriting Contest, and a category winner in the 2011 Great American Song Contest, Tara Priya continues to rack up major honors with her recent Billboard win.
